چکیده

The asymptotics of Rydberg states, i.e., highly excited bound states of the hydrogen atom Hamiltonian, and various expectations involving these states are investigated. We show that suitable linear combinations of these states, appropriately rescaled and regarded as functions either in momentum space or con guration space, are highly concentrated on classical momentum space or con guration space Kepler orbits respectively, for large quantum numbers. Expectations of momentum space or con guration space functions with respect to these states are related to time-averages of these functions over Kepler orbits. 1 Section

Simulation of motion and radiative decay of Rydberg hydrogen atoms in electric and magnetic fields

We have simulated the motion of a Rydberg hydrogen atom in electric and magnetic fields that have a strong position dependence. The orientation and strengths of the fields depend strongly on the spatial position of the atom. The angle between the fields could take on any value. We use the quantum energy levels for a Rydberg state in electric and magnetic fields to derive a spatially dependent p...

Plasma screening within Rydberg atoms in circular states

A Rydberg atom embedded in a plasma can experience penetration by slowly moving electrons within its volume. The original pure Coulomb potential must now be replaced by a screened Coulomb potential which contains either a screening length Rs or a screening factor A = R −1 s . For any given discrete energy level, there is a Critical Screening Factor (CSF) Ac beyond which the energy level disappe...

Observation of a Rydberg series in H+H-: a heavy Bohr atom.

We report on the realization of a heavy "Bohr atom," through the spectroscopic observation of a Rydberg series of bound quantum states at principal quantum numbers n=140 to 230. The system is made heavy by replacing an electron inside a hydrogen atom by a composite H- particle, thus forming a H+H- Coulombically bound system obeying the physical laws of a generalized atom with appropriate mass s...

Driven Rydberg atoms reveal quartic level repulsion.

The dynamics of Rydberg states of a hydrogen atom subjected simultaneously to uniform static electric field and two microwave fields with commensurate frequencies is considered in the range of small field amplitudes. In the certain range of the parameters of the system the classical secular motion of the electronic ellipse reveals chaotic behavior. Quantum mechanically, when the fine structure ...

Magnetic trapping of strongly-magnetized Rydberg atoms

Effective magnetic moments of drift Rydberg atoms in strong magnetic fields are obtained for different energy and angular-momentum states. Classical two-body trajectory calculations and quantummechanical one-body calculations are employed. For heavy atoms such as rubidium, the trapping dynamics can largely be explained by the net magnetic moment due to the cyclotron and the magnetron motion of ...
